Your oral health reflects a great deal about your health. If you have healthy teeth, firm pink gums and are blessed with fresh breath, it is more likely that your other physical health is also in good shape. At OptiSmile, we recommend that you invest sufficient time and attention in your oral health.

Here's why good oral hygiene is so important

If you do everything possible to brush bacteria out of your mouth and take good care of your teeth, you will also be able to keep disease at bay much more quickly. So good oral hygiene is important for your overall health. It is also a good way to keep your breath fresh. If bacteria start to build up on the tongue, it will affect the smell coming from your mouth. In addition, saliva naturally contains many antibodies. These defend against infections, viruses and diseases. If too many bacteria collect in the mouth, plaque forms and damages the gums. This causes inflamed gums, which can lead to more serious infections. In addition, research has shown, for example, that people with gum disease are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. So take good care of your mouth, and you'll be doing your whole body a favour!

Tips for taking good care of your mouth

First of all, it is important to brush your teeth twice a day. This includes brushing the tongue to remove bacteria. In addition, it is best to floss twice a day. This can be done with toothpicks, floss, brushes or a water flosser. Make sure not to brush or floss directly after eating or drinking acidic drinks, coffee or red wine. Also limit your eating and drinking to a maximum of 7 times a day. If you eat or drink all day long, it also means that your teeth are constantly suffering from minor external attacks and become less resistant.

What should I look for when checking my oral health?

In order to know whether your mouth is still healthy and whether your oral hygiene is in order, you can keep an eye on a number of things. You can check to see if your breath still smells good and if you have any abnormal spots on your tongue. You can also check for stains or discolouration on the teeth and for any accumulation of substances between the teeth. If you regularly have bleeding or receding gums, this may also be an indication of something abnormal in your health. If in doubt, contact your dentist or dental hygienist.
